Get Don Draper’s Look

Celebrity groomer, Diana Schmidtke, works with Mad Men star, Jon Hamm, in additional to many of Hollywood’s leading men, and feels the show has completely transformed men’s style – and the 60’s look is bigger than ever!
 
Below, Diana shares her tips on how guys can get the dapper Don’s look in a few easy steps:
 
-          Keep hair clean and soft with a good sulfate free shampoo and conditioner.
 
-          If you opt for a more mature version of Don Draper’s look, apply a gel evenly through the hair for shine and volume, then use a comb to create a side part.  Blow dry hair into place on each side of the part, using fingertips to create a little volume in the front.
 
-          To put a modern edge on this classic 60’s look, start with damp hair and apply your gel from the front-to-back, using fingers.  Blow-dry hair backwards, continuing to move fingers front-to-back.  Finish the look by using fingertips to create volume in the front, and adding a dab of grooming cream on dry hair for maximum hold and matte finish.
 
-          To complete the look, get a clean shave. Start by holding a warm washcloth to your face for 60 seconds and then exfoliate to remove dead skin cells that can block the blade.  Apply shaving cream over the beard and let it sit for at least two minutes to avoid razor burn.  Begin shaving with the grain with two short strokes, rinse the blade clean, and repeat. It’s important to rinse the blade as it decreases the chance of nicks, razor burn and ingrown hairs.  Next, go in for an even closer shave by pulling the skin taut and going against the grain. Finally, rinse skin clean with cold water to close pores.

Barber

My obsession with barbers and grooming has been fixture since childhood.  Recently I have been a bit adventurous with adding distinct elements to my barber experience like growing out my beard and adding stripes to signify the number of decades I have lived.  Little ways to spice up the standard one blade Cesar cut.
